Behind the Apron: How I Dream Up New Cookie Designs Each Month 🎨🍪

Ever wonder how those fun, seasonal cookies from Equation for Sweetness come to life? Planning new cookie designs and flavors is one of my favorite parts of running a dye free bakery! I wanted to take you behind the apron and share a little peek at my process—and maybe inspire your own creativity along the way.
Where the Inspiration Begins
Every month starts with a brainstorm. I think about what’s trending, upcoming holidays, and what my customers have been loving lately. Sometimes, inspiration strikes from a walk through the farmers market or a chat with my husband Max (who’s always up for taste-testing!).
I also love hearing from YOU! Polls and voting for the monthly flavor are a big part of the process. Your feedback helps me decide which new ideas to try out and which classic flavors to bring back.
From Idea to Cookie Cutter
Once I have a theme or flavor in mind, it’s time to research designs. I consider:
Seasonal colors and shapes (think pumpkins in October or hearts in February)
What’s fun for kids and families (like our popular cookie pops or tic tac toe sets)
How to use my favorite plant-based food colorings so every cookie stays dye free and beautiful
After making my decisions, I test out a few batches—sometimes things get a little messy, and sometimes they go hilariously wrong! I’ve ended up with cookies that were more like bouncy balls than baked goods, and I’ve had dough so sticky I couldn’t get it off my hands, let alone roll it out. But honestly, that’s half the fun!
Planning Ahead (But Keeping It Fresh)
I usually plan designs about a month in advance so I have time to order special ingredients or packaging. But I always leave a little room for last-minute inspiration or customer requests. If you ever have an idea for a cookie shape or flavor, don’t hesitate to send it my way!
The Final Touch: Sharing with You
Once the new menu is ready, I announce it on Instagram, Facebook, and through my newsletter. I love seeing your reactions and reading your comments—it makes all the planning and late-night decorating totally worth it!
